Online sales: watch out for the scams

If you are a fashion addicted like me, in these days you are receiving A LOT of newsletter promoting the final sales. 50, 60, up to 80% on amazing designer pieces straight from the runway, nobody wants to miss a good bargain BUT is it really gold all that glitters?

Since when I was a kid my mum always taught me to watch out for scams during sales. In Italy it is pretty common practice to “give a new life” to old collection pieces or to raise the prices before applying a discount. So I´ve always been an (eager) but wise shopper and as much as I LOVE shopping, I never do it before  double (or triple) checking the prices.
This is how I discovered some not really pleasant surprises…

One of the biggest online destination for shopping, a site that I´ve been shopping on more than once, has been raising the prices during the sales. Not exactly what you would expect from a luxury website, right?! But unfortunately a true story.

So here is what happened: this website is always one of the first ones to start with the sales, so about 3 weeks ago they had already items discounted up to 75%.

This is already a BIG discount, isn´t it? But there are other direct competitors that are lowering the prices even more, so at My Wardrobe, decided to reward their most loyal members, the newsletter subscribers (including me) with an “extra 25%” of discount.
AWESOME! I thought, I can finally afford that fab designer dress that I´ve been dreaming about, so I went straight to the site aaaand…. I discovered that the 25% WASN´T AN EXTRA DISCOUNT AT ALL.
They decided to lower the discounts on the site before applying the “extra” one. All the items previously discounted at 75%  were magically lowered at 50. You might argue that the final discount was still the same, but to me it is a matter of principle. Why promising an “extra” discount when it is not? To me it is totally scam and it makes me doubt about the website and its choices. And what do you think? In a competitive market like online commerce is it really everything allowed?

Each year, GQ partners with Gap to highlight some of the best newcomers in the men’s fashion. Now in its eighth year, the Best New Menswear Designers in America has rolled out their new class of sartorial all-stars. For the third installment in this series, I’m profiling the new cool kid on the block John Elliott + Co. Designer John Elliott has put his unique spin on the casual ready-to-wear market with slim, slouchy tees and premium denim. I’ve styled these John Elliott + Co jeans with some of my favorite Gap pieces, like this paisley jacquard shirt. You know that frustrating moment when your outfit won’t work because your top needs to be slightly longer to cover ill-fitting jeans, or you’re trying to tuck the extra length of your jeans in to skinny ankle boots to no avail?

I did away with those annoying problems a little while ago, and the solution was very simple.

Rather than owning multiple pairs of jeans, and liking and disliking certain things about each pair, I reworked my wardrobe to only include four or five pairs of the ultimate, staple denim jeans – and by that I mean, ones that fit so well you basically want to wear them with nothing else… but unfortunately it’s pretty damn cold in Sydney and nipples aren’t socially acceptable… Instagram doesn’t even like them.

These four pairs will have you covered from day to night. All day, every day.

Classic, timeless and versatile. These are jeans to live in. Wear them with a white boyfriend shirt to channel Parisian chic, or try double denim if you’re game. You can mix and match denims, or go head-to-toe in one wash. Here’s one I prepared earlier:
Wearing vintage denim shirt and Nobody jeans

These are your day-to-night friends. Dark denim looks slightly more “polished”, but this wash basically goes with anything. For daytime, I love them paired with a simple T-shirt and Birkenstocks.

Wearing Cotton On T-shirt, Nobody jeans and Birkenstocks.

A woman’s best friend. All hail the black high-rise skinnies, a.k.a. the most flattering jeans ever. I love wearing them with chunky knits or a crisp white shirt and a boyfriend blazer. The contrast of suiting and denim means you can dress up without looking (or feeling) like you’re trying.

Wearing Mango blazer, Oskar shirt, Nobody jeans and Pour La Victoire mules.

The hero jeans for after five or dressier occasions. I tend to live in these in winter because they’re the next best thing to leather pants (which are often unflattering and really uncomfortable).

These four pairs are super stretchy, so they mould to your body like a second skin, meaning you can sit however you want and feel right at home. Like me, lounging all around this awesome car which I borrowed from my photographer’s assistant for these photos.

Nobody‘s skinny jeans are the best fit I’ve found to date, and by far the most comfortable.

How do you wear your skinnies?

Inspiration of the week: Prada fall 14 men’s campaign

I rarely fall in love with men’s campaign, but this one took me down.

The foggy English seashore, a Golden Globe nominated actor who looks like he is coming from another time and a photographers who is a genius in showcasing emotions through pictures.
All of this and much more is captured in the latest men’s fall campaign of Prada. To me it is so incredibly beautiful that makes me want to wear a coat, even in the middle of summer.

These days I’ll tell you about some of my b-day presents… As you know I made my wishlist here, and some of my ‘wishes’ came true! I always loved instant photos, and i have a Polaroid 600 for years so ma man had the cool idea of, instead of buying me the Fujifilm Instax Mini I asked for, kept the ‘real thing’ working buying me these Black Frame Films for my oldie Pola :)

I loved the idea and the get meeting I did with my loved ones to celebrate my B-Day was ‘framed in black’ with a lot of fun. You can find these films here. I ‘hate’ going to The Impossible Project website because I always feel like I need everything…

Weekday Way

It’s that time again; it’s Monday. Monday and I have one very vitriolic relationship. I can’t quite surrender my good will and happy feelings to the day that continues to stick the middle finger to my weekend fun. I always know it’s coming but I’m never truly prepared for Monday misery. Ill feelings aside, I’m ready to work this week; I’m ready to tackle one full schedule. The look I chose to start my week with includes another pair of Abercrombie denim – the classic straight jean. I liked the fact that the brand offers so many fit options (and variety of washes) so picking out a pair that fit my personality was easy. This pair was especially cool because it was inspired by vintage denim (a personal favorite) and included some cool antiqued metal hardware/buttons. I completed the look with my typically comfortable palette of navy and white because few other combinations thrill me more.
