ALL AGLOW: TANNING TIPS FOR WINTER.

In summer I tan religiously so I don’t offend people with my translucentness when hit the beach, but as the cooler months creep up and the black jeans and oversize knits come out of the closet I start to get a bit lax.

This year I’m turning things around. Why? Well, why not….

It makes sense, really. We’re naturally more tanned in summer and yet we’re way more keen to dive into the fake tan bottle than we are in winter – when the sky is grey, our skin is pale and we’re wearing head-to-toe black! A bit of faux glow will go a long way. Trust me!

Here’s six tanning products I couldn’t live without:

Image from Vogue Australia November 2010.

This oil-based instant body bronzer is the perfect for winter because the Tahini oil moisturises and smoothes the skin. Yes, it’s slightly shimmery, but your skin can do with a bit of ‘glow’ in winter and chances are you won’t be in heaps of direct sunlight, therefore you won’t look like a disco ball.

Tip: rub it all over your body directly after showing for maximum hydration. Oh, and did I mention it smells absolutely incredible?!

I think of raved on about face tanners before, but seriously… they’re the best thing goin’ ’round. Applying a small amount of this Clinique one before bed makes you wake up looking like you’ve been to the Bahamas overnight.

The best bit? It’s also soft enough to apply under your make-up before you go to work on those days when you’re feeling a little under the weather (yay for puns!).

The crème de la crème of bronzers! Remember, cream is key in winter. Keep it in your handbag and apply a bit to your cheeks when your face needs a bit of colour.

Daria Werbowy by Patrick Demarchelier for Industrie magazine.

My skin tone is more towards the ‘yellow’ end of the scale, and this is the best tan I have come across so far. To colour is extremely natural and it doesn’t come out too dark, so there’s no risk of waking up looking like a gingerbread man.

The first time I applied this all over my body I was a bit alarmed – it goes on quite dark and continues to develop over time so I was a bit worried about the final result. Alas, when I jumped in the shower the next morning it revealed a perfect, deep tan sans any orange undertones.

I use this one before a night out, rather than every day.

Tip: these products are both best applied using a mit. I own mits by both of these brands and they both work well, but the St Tropez one seems to apply a thinner layer of product, so I use that when I want a more subtle tan.

I use this moisturiser on my arms and legs to extend the life of my tan. The best part? The colour is nice and subtle so you can put it on in a hurry without looking like you did later!

CLINIQUE MAKE-UP GIVEAWAY & HOW TO GET THE LOOK AT DOLCE & GABBANA A/W 2013.

15-05-2013

I’ve recently taken a strong liking to gel eye liner.

I used to be a soft shadow kinda girl until I saw my friend wearing barely-there make-up with a bold slick of black along her top lids and I just loved the way it accentuated her eyes.

Now I’m hooked.

Dolce & Gabbana’s autumn/winter 2013 make-up was breathtaking and absolutely perfect for a bold after five look.

If you missed out on the giveaway for Gucci’s bronze smokey eye – never fear – it’s giveaway time again!

Wearing Natasha Gan leather dress and earrings from My Wardrobe
THE STEPS:

1. Begin with a clean base. An even complexion is key for this look, so I used Clinique Stay-Matte Oil-Free make-up followed by concealer under my eyes and around my nose.

2. Using your finger, apply Clinique’s Lid Smoothie over the entire eyelid.

3. Apply a small amount of the Brush-On Cream Liner to the brush supplied, then apply along the lash line beginning from the inner corner of each eye.

Tip: I never close my eye entirely when applying liner. After all, the idea is that the line will accentuate your eyes when open!

To get a flattering shape at the outer edge of the eye, draw the line so that it follows the natural curve of your bottom lash line if your eyes are open. The end of the line should point to the end of your brow.

4. Use Clinique’s Instant Lift for Brows to shade brows in and define them.

Fact: thicker brows make you look more youthful!

5. Line lips using Clinique’s Quickliner for Lips

Tip: to achieve a perfectly symmetrical outline, begin in the middle of the cupid’s bow on each side and work your way outwards.

6. Finish the look with Clinique’s Long Last Lipstick in Party Red. Voilà!

HOW TO DO THE MAKE-UP AT TALULAH S/S 2013/14.

17-04-2013

Give me a bronze or taupe smokey eye over black any day. Less ‘party girl, out for a big night on the town’, more ‘softly (and subtly) seductive’.

The brief for Talulah‘s make-up look was “glowing, bronzed, healthy Australian girls”. AMEN!

If you want to look like Montana, Rachel Rutt and Nicole Pollard on the runway at their MBFWA show last week – so do I, and we’re only human.

The truth is that many things (including this make-up look I tried from Gucci A/W 2013 and Rodarte’s high-cut bodysuits worn with low-slung pants) look better on the runway, but Talulah‘s bonzed, glowly make-up look is something that even us mere mortals can pull off.

Here, make-up artist Liz Kelsh – who has worked with the likes of Cate Blanchett, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Bosworth (to name a few) – shows us how.

The steps

1. Brighten the eye area by applying an eye cream. Liz used SK-II Signs Eye Mask on me.

2. Lay the foundations: Liz conditioned my skin by gently pressing SK-II Facial Treatment Essence onto my face, followed by SK-II Cellumination Deep Surge Ex Moisturiser.

3. Apply Max Factor Colour Precision Eyeshadow in Coffee to the entire eyelid, followed by Earth Spirits Eyeshadow in Burnt Bark.

Tip: wet brush with a small amount of sparkling water and dab on the socket to intensify the colour.

4. Apply foundation with a brush, beginning at the nose and blending outwards. Liz used Facefinity All Day Flawless 3-in-1 Foundation. Use a pearlised shadow or highlighter on the bridge of the nose and cheek bones to create a luminous finish.

5. Add a soft rose coloured blush to the apples of the cheeks.

6. Generously coat lashes with mascara starting with the bottom lash line first.

7. Add colour to the lips by lining them with Colour Elixir Giant Pen Stick (coming soon) in Hot Chocolate, then filling in the centre with a slightly lighter shade (Couture Blush) to make lips appear fuller.

Tip: pressing SK-II’s Facial Treatment Essence into skin once finished will make your skin glow!

CLINIQUE MAKEUP GIVEAWAY & HOW TO GET THE LOOK AT GUCCI A/W 2013.

02-04-2013

I love a defined eye in the PM, but sometimes a kohl smokey eye is just a little too intense.

When I saw the bold bronzey goodness backstage at Gucci, I died  so I decided to team up with Clinique to try the look at home.

The best part? You can win the products I used in just a few sweet clicks.

I USED:

1. Clinique Blushing Blush in Aglow (best.shade.ever.)

*Two lucky winners will receive a Clinique gift pack featuring the products listed above.

To enter, simply Like the Clinique Facebook page (click here) and leave a comment on this post with your name and email address!

THE STEPS:

1. The models at Gucci clearly had their eyebrows bleached which is out of the question for most of us mere mortals. If you want to minimise the appearance of your brows (and accentuate the eyeshadow), comb concealer through them with a spoolie brush.

2. Cover the entire eyelid with Clinique’s Lid Smoothie.

3. I’m not too good when it comes to getting the shape of my eyeshadow even – especially when the colour is intense. Have the same problem? Draw a guideline with a white eyeliner.

Tip: draw it while your eye is open to find the most flattering shape.
4. Apply shade 2 of Clinique’s Eyeshadow Quad to the inner corner of the eyes. Then, apply shade 3 over the eyelid and above the crease to the line drawn in step 3.

5. Use an angular eyeshadow brush to take the shadow along the lower lash line.

Tip: don’t fret if you look like a raccoon (see below) because we blend the outline later.

5. Increase the intensity of the colour and further define the eyes by applying shade 4 into and just above the crease of the eyelid.

6. Use a blending brush to soften the outline of the shadow. You may need to apply a bit of shade 2 in the Eyeshadow Quad to the brow bone and blend it into the smokey eye outline to do so. Follow with two coats of High Impact Extreme Volume Mascara.

7. Apply Clinique’s Blushing Blush just underneath the cheekbones and finish with a slick of Chubby Stick in Curvy Candy.

Entries close on April 16. The winners must Like the Clinique Facebook page to receive the prize.

Good luck!! x

WINTER WARDROBE: LET’S START PLANNING.

21-03-2013

COLOURS COLLIDE.

17-03-2013

It’s been a while since I’ve found a piece of clothing that I love absolutely everything about. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve made purchases which have made great new additions to ze wardrobe, but there’s usually something that I’m not 100% sure about – e.g. the shape of a T-shirt, the length of a skirt of the colours of a print.

Perfect prints are few and far between. There’s usually always something I would change. But when I saw the ridiculously amazing the print is on this Life with Bird dress, it had me at hello. The perfect oversize shape, the beautiful silk and the way it moves with the wind have secured it as the one thing in my wardrobe I couldn’t live without right now.

What’s the best purchase you’ve made recently? Tell me! Tell me! Tell me!

HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THE GRUNGE MOVEMENT?

11-03-2013

Okay, so I’m not quite grungy.

Actually, I’m not even close, but after seeing the grunge effect take center stage at Saint Laurent, Fendi and beyond, I decided to add a little bit of hardcore to my wardrobe with these Windsor Smith boots.

I’m not usually one for maxi skirts, but I think the boots and the split work together just perfectly.

My tip? Add elements of grunge – like kohl-rimmed eyes, leather pants or some chunky silver hardware, but mix it back with softer, pretty pieces to get grunge glam, not grunge goth/someone scrub me down immediately.

Have an amazing week! Another outfit post coming on Wednesday x

INTRODUCING: MY BIRTHDAY DRESS & A NEW PROJECT I’VE BEEN WORKING ON.

03-03-2013

Photos by Ana Suntay-Tañedo.

Wearing Bruuns Bazaar dress, Alexander Wang boots and cuff by Cynics Accessories.

It was my birthday a couple of weeks ago. Here’s a few pictures of ze outfit I wore!

It’s incredible how many times the LBD can be reinvented. Black isn’t usually the colour I’d go for on my birthday. Too safe. Plus, birthdays are meant to be a celebration which calls for bright colours and sparkles, right? It was the shape of this dress that won me over – no need to worry about the post pig-out belly or birthday cake bloating!

Anyhoo, a new magazine I’ve been working on launched today:

Sunday Style, available in The Sunday Herald Sun, The Sunday Telegraph and the iTunes store

Some really amazing people are involved, including Zoe Foster, Hamish Blake, Jane Kennedy and Vogue Australia‘s Christine Centenera.

Check it out! And follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest

Have a great week! xxx
